Already own a Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine? Great news—you won’t need anything else besides your Hot Foil System and the foil products you choose.
If you don’t already own one, I recommend adding it to your order with the Hot Foil System. The Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine is one of the most-used tools in my craft room because it also works with Stampin’ Up!’s dies and embossing folders. It’s a purchase you’ll continue using for years.

Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System FAQs
Learning something new can feel overwhelming at first, but hot foiling is easier than you might think. Here are answers to some of the most common questions to help make Hot Foiling Made Simple.
What type of cardstock works best?
Stampin’ Up! recommends Two-Tone Cardstock because its smooth surface produces the crispest, most detailed foiling.
That said, I’ve used our regular colored cardstock and Basic White Cardstock for most of my projects and have been very happy with the results. While regular cardstock has a little more texture, I honestly think it foils beautifully.
You can also foil on Vellum, Window Sheets, and Designer Series Paper. If you’re trying a new paper for the first time, I recommend doing a quick test first to see how it foils.
Can I use Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Dies in another hot foil machine?
Yes—the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Dies should work with other hot foil machines that use the same style of heat-transfer foil dies.
The Hot Foil Dies themselves are separate from the Stampin’ Hot Foil System, so they are expected to be compatible with other machines designed for this type of hot foiling.
However, because Stampin’ Up! has only tested and supports their products with the Stampin’ Hot Foil System, I can’t guarantee compatibility or performance with other brands of hot foil machines.
If you already own a compatible hot foil machine, the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Dies may be a great way to expand your design collection.

Do I have to use Stampin’ Up! foil?
For the best results, I recommend using the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil Rolls designed and tested for the system.
Can I use my existing dies?
Cutting Dies and Hot Foil Dies each have a different purpose.
Cutting Dies are designed to cut paper and cardstock—they cannot be used to create foiled images.
Hot Foil Dies (sometimes called hot foiling plates) are designed specifically for foiling. They transfer foil to your cardstock, but they do not cut.
Some Hot Foil Dies have coordinating cutting dies, allowing you to foil an image first and then cut it out with the matching die.
Think of it this way:
- Hot Foil Die = Creates the foiled image
- Cutting Die = Cuts out the image
How long does it take to heat up?
The platform takes about 6 minutes to heat up initially. Then it takes about 1½ minutes for the die to heat up before you can add your foil.
Is hot foiling difficult?
Not at all. There are simply a few more steps than plain stamping, so there is a little learning curve. That’s why I created the Quick Reference Guide and beginner workshop. My goal is: Hot Foiling Made Simple
What else do I need besides the Hot Foil System?
Besides what comes with the Hot Foil System, to get started, you’ll also need:
- Hot Foiling Dies
- Hot Foil
- Cardstock
- Your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine
Do I need a Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine?
Yes. The Stampin’ Hot Foil System was specifically designed to work with the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. Stampin’ Up! has not tested it with other die-cutting machines and only guarantees it when used as directed.
