Card Making 101: Coloring Basics For Card Making With Markers

Welcome to Class 9 of our Card Making 101 series! Now that we’ve started designing and creating our own cards, it’s time to explore some coloring basic for card making to enhance your projects. In Class 1, All About Stamps, we learned the difference between line image and bold image stamps, and we even created a few SIP (Stamps, Ink, & Paper) cards featuring line image stamps. Today, we’re taking those line images to the next level by introducing two types of markers: Stampin’ Blends and Stampin’ Write. These tools will open up new creative possibilities for adding color and detail to your handmade cards!

In class 9 of our Card Making 101 series, you’ll learn about:

  • Coloring with Stampin’ Blends
  • Coloring with Stampin’ Write markers
  • Adding multiple colors of ink to your stamps with markers

Card Making 101, Class 9

In this video class, I (Jackie, an experienced card maker) teach Jesi (my daughter, a beginner card maker) coloring basics for card making. We hope that if you’re also new to making cards you can learn alongside Jesi and build your knowledge and confidence as she does while coloring with markers.

There’s a lot more information shared in the video class than what’s written below. So make sure to give it a watch to learn everything you need to know about coloring basics for card making!

Differences Between Markers

The two colored flower images from Card Making 101, Class 9: Coloring Basics For Card Making, to show the differences between coloring with Stampin' Blends and Stampin' Write markers.

Stampin’ Up! has two different kinds of markers, and they both have different uses and purposes:

  • Stampin’ Blends:
    • Alcohol-based ink
    • Dual tip with a brush and fine tip end
    • Buy individual colors and they come in a two pack, a light and a dark shade
    • Best for creating depth and dimension in your images by overlapping the light and dark shades
  • Stampin’ Write Markers:
    • Water-based ink
    • Dual tip with a brush and fine tip end
    • Buy multi-packs in color groups, one marker per color
    • Best for writing, light coloring, and adding color directly to your cling stamps

Card Measurements

Handmade card designed with the Stampin' Up! stamp set Everyday Details colored with Stampin' Blends. A project designed to teach coloring basics for card making.

As you learned in the video class, I’m a huge fan of coloring with the Stampin’ Blends. Having the two shades, and since the brush marks disappear, they make it easy to feel like an artist when using them. Here’s the completed card example that we shared in the class for turning your colored image into a beautiful handmade card!

MEASUREMENTS:

  • Basic Beige Card Base: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
  • Designer Series Paper: 4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Basic Black: 2 5/8″ x 3 5/8″
  • Basic White: 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
