Have you ever wanted to try heat embossing and you were not quite sure how? Or maybe you were not very successful and it did not turn out like you wanted. The technique is easy if you follow these simple steps. You’ll be a pro at it in no time!
I love to heat emboss, especially to make the greetings pop! On many of the cards that I share, you will notice that I like to create my greeting layer on black card stock and add heat embossing using white embossing powder. I really like this look as it really makes the greeting pop.
I am going to show you the easy way to heat emboss, both using colored embossing powder (white), and then a little trick to use with all your ink pads! Did you know that you can heat emboss in any color using clear embossing powder? That opens up so many doors since you can then emboss any color!

Heat Embossing: Tips For Using Colored Embossing Powder
What I most commonly do is use white embossing powder on black, or other dark card stock. Any time you are using colored embossing powder, you will want to stamp your image in VersaMark ink. This is a clear, sticky, slow drying ink that your powder will stick to.
Simply ink up your image and “stamp” it, apply the powder, then heat! Easy Peasy–your heat emboss is complete!
You also can use gold, silver, bronze, or any other color of embossing powder! It all works the same way that I show using the white powder on the black card stock.

Heat Embossing Tips With Any Color Ink Pad
What? You can heat emboss with any color ink pad? YES!!!! Check out the ladybug’s wings on the card below; they are a nice shiny red!
If you are using a “dye-based” ink, they typically dry fast. This doesn’t allow enough time for the powder to stick. Instead, first, ink your stamp in VersaMark (make sure it’s a clean stamp) and then ink in the colored ink. The ink will now stay wet long enough for you to add clear embossing powder and be able to heat it up.
For the wings, I first inked the stamp with VersaMark, then inked again with the Real Red, and then stamped it. Next, add the CLEAR embossing powder and heat. As it melts you will see the nice red ink! Walla–heat embossing is simple and fun and can be done in any color!

Great information! I’ve been heat embossing for years, but didn’t know about versa mark with a dye ink pad. A new technique to try.
