Card Making 201, Class 6
In this video class, I (Jackie, an experienced card maker) teach Jesi (my daughter, a beginner card maker) the spotlighting technique. We hope that if you’re also a beginner card maker you can learn alongside Jesi and build your knowledge and confidence as she does.
There’s a lot more information shared in the video class than what’s written below. So make sure to give it a watch to learn everything you need to know to spotlight your cards confidently!
Spotlighting Technique Card Details

Card is stamped with the Doggone Friendly background stamp and one dog has been die cut out and colored with Stampin' Blends.](https://i0.wp.com/klompenstampers.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/CM201-Spotlighting-Card1a.jpg?resize=640%2C640&ssl=1)
The first spotlighting technique card we made in the video glass was with the Doggone Friendly background stamp. To learn easy tips on how to stamp such a large stamp – watch the video class where and follow along with Jesi as I walk her through it.
To make this card and to do the spotlighting technique, we started by stamping the layer with all the dogs. We then picked out one to die cut and color. Next, we did a paper saving hack and die cut the two Early Espresso circles from the large background layer. And for the final step, we adhered all the layers and lined the die cut dog image to match back to the large background! And to top the card off – we heat embossed the sentiment.
Card Measurements:
- Crumb Cake Card Base: 4 1/4″ x 11″, score at 5 1/2″
- Early Espresso: 3 7/8″ x 5 1/8″
- Basic White: 3 3/4″ x 5″

The second spotlighting card we shared in the video class was this Enduring Beauty card idea. We’ve used this stamp set many times throughout 101 and 201 – so here’s another new idea of what you can create with it!
Just like above, we started by stamping the background and then die cut from the center of it. Colored the die cut piece and then lined it back up with the original image. However, this time we did not add a coordinating layer behind it – just a different example of how you can do the spotlighting technique. And another heat embossed sentiment to add an extra touch to this handmade card.
Card Measurements:
- Basic Gray Card Base: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
- Basic Black: 3 7/8″ x 5 1/8″
- Basic White: 3 3/4″ x 5″
