Where to Find Card Making Ideas

I think one of the hardest things about learning to make cards is where to find card making ideas. The struggle is real, even for myself and I have been making cards for about 30 years! You all think I am so creative…but really, I am not! But, over the years I have learned where to find card making ideas, as well as how to tweak them to make them my own.

You see, in the world of card making, it is OK to copy. You often see the term CASE! CASE stands for COPY AND SHARE EVERYTHING. Card makers love to share, and when we share, we are saying COPY OUR IDEAS. We want you to enjoy card making as much as we do, and we know the best way to learn and get creative is to copy. So – COPY AWAY!

Did you really say copy? YES! I truly believe that it is OK to copy ideas you see out there. It’s how we all become better card makers and enjoy this fun hobby. Anything that I share – please COPY. Make a card like mine and then pass on the blessing by sending it to someone!

Now, I suppose I should clarify a bit…. what is NOT ok is to copy a card exactly and then try to pass it on as your own design. There is no shame in copying, but please don’t copy exactly and then post on the internet as your idea. But you can certainly copy and share, just indicate where you got your inspiration. And, since most of you are making cards to mail or give to people, there is no need to tell them where you got the idea!

Let’s all become better card makers by looking online and finding card making ideas and then get to creating… and sending cards!

Where to Find Card Making Ideas

Today’s video is all about how to copy a card making design. I show you how I find ideas, and how you can too. As well as how to take a basic idea or design that you see and tweak it a bit to make it your own, or to create it using other products that you may already have.

The more you make the cards, the better you will become at looking at card making ideas and using them as inspiration to be creative on your own! You can see in the photo below, the top right card is pretty much an exact copy from the Stampin’ Up! catalog. That is usually the first place I go to get ideas when I have new stamps!

These cards are made using the SIMPLY FABULOUS stamp set from Stampin’ Up! which is a great “getting started set of stamps. If you’d like to purchase it, you can find it in the Stampin’ Up! Store.

And then, to make this card a little bit more mine, and my style, I simply added a layer of Basic Black and Basic White. I also changed the greeting to black instead of the Coastal Cabana because that is what I prefer!

See how easy it is to make it your own! Start with an idea, then change just a bit.

Take Card Making Ideas & Make Them Your Own

One of the easiest ways to take a card making idea and make your own is to change the colors. You can see in this example I changed not only the ink color, but also added the Crumb Cake for the card base, rather than the white.

And where did I get my color combination??? The COLOR COACH is perfect for this. It takes every Stampin’ Up! color and shows you different combinations that look fantastic together. I use this all the time. Want to make one, I have all the files that you can download HERE.

  1. I do enjoy watching your channel. In this one you mentioned that pdfs were available from Stampin Up for the cards displayed in the catalog? Where are these found or are they just available for demonstrators?

    • I am amazed that Jackie has included the link for the card ideas in the catalogue. I never knew that Stampin’ Up had this resource available. I went to a Canadian Stampin’ Up Demonstrator page and could not find it so not sure if it is available for everyone. I was curious to “see” the pdf so went on the hunt for the pdf. I “think” if you go to the top tab on Jackie’s blog page… here… you will see a tab called “Learn to Make Cards”… click this, then if you scroll down the page, you will see a full list of links for the pdf catalogue card ideas with the necessary materials to make. I hope this helps. 🙂
