Did You Know Color Choice Makes A Difference For Your Greeting Cards?

Let me show you how the card making color choice you make reflects the emotion and how a simple change of color can change the entire vibe of a handmade card. The project I have for you today shows you how you can take one simple card layout, and just change the colors.

I use the same stamps and measurements for each of these cards and just change the ink and cardstock color. It can make a big difference as to the emotion one gets when looking at the card.

Left Card: Polished Pink ink on Smoky Slate card base. Right Card: Gorgeous Grape Ink on Crumb Cake card base (my personal favorite).
  • Card Base: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
  • Basic White Stamped Layer: 3″ x 3″
  • Back Layer: 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″
  • Basic White Layer: 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″

It’s all about the color choice! These first 2 cards are BRIGHT, cheerful, and fun!

Left card: CRUMB CAKE. Right card: PETAL PINK Both cards stamped in same color as card base.

These 2 card color choices are softer, quieter, and maybe perfect as a Get Well, Sympathy, or for when someone is struggling.

Make the “Greeting Pop”

I often emboss my greeting with white embossing powder on black card stock. To me, this makes the greeting POP! Check out these 2 card samples:

  1. Thank you for another informative, helpful video. The only thing different that I would do is regarding the card with Real Red flowers. I think white on white has an elegant look, but I would add another layer of black under the white layer before putting it on the white card base. In my opinion, the card would stand out better as it seems to rather fade into the white card base.

  2. I like the Crumb Cake on Crumb Cake. The black really makes it pop. I spend a lot of time trying different colors on my cards; and you’re right … different colors do make for a different “feeling.”

This was very helpful. I also like the square shape at the top of the card rather than covering the entire card base. Thanks for doing this. It’s more food for thought and will make my cards less predictable.

  3. I would like to have tried the purple on a lavender background & the yellow on a warm light green background. It is fun to mix the colors with complimentary colors.

  5. I love all the variety using one stamp… I think I would like to try the gorgeous grape flowers on a gray card base….. might look nice??

    • I like your idea of using gray rather than black, Patti, thanks for mentioning. For me, black just seems harsh with some of these beautiful mellow colors (pink, crumb cake) that Jackie chose to use. And Jackie, I love the colors you used for the flowers, and that you popped up the one flower – I really like that idea – thank you!

  6. This is a great video. You’re right…. The color does convey different messaging! I do like the crumb cake flower on crumb cake , however I would never think to stamp a flower in crumb cake!! I’m going to try the gorgeous grape on highland Heather. I really like that pop of black on the layer and the white embossed on black. Thanks for inspiring us!!

  8. Thanks so much for sharing your talent! I’ll have fun trying these! A question, how do you achieve such clean embossed images? I always seem to have embossing powder bits that stay on where I don’t want them

    • Heather, the trick is to use an anti-static powder on your cardstock first. Something like this (Stampin’ Up! doesn’t sell these anymore). You rub this on your cardstock first, then apply versamark, then powder, then heat set. Hope this helps you!
