Let’s talk cardstock basics + how to cut card base and layers and get all your questions answered! This is part 3 of my Card Making for Beginners series.

Knowing cardstock basics is the 3rd essential item when making cards.  We have already talked about stamps, ink…and now on to cardstock!

I get asked all the time, “how do you make card bases?” or “How do I cut cardstock for cards?” Then there are the questions about the difference in Stampin’ Up!’s ‘regular’ whisper white cardstock vs. thick whisper white. Let’s chat about all of that today.

Cardstock Basics: How to Cut Card Bases, Layers & More

This video is filled with cardstock cutting tips that will help all of you beginner card makers, and hopefully teach you something new if you have been paper crafting for awhile.  I throw out lots of numbers, and it may be confusing, but watch to the end as I think it will all come together and make sense.

Cardstock Basics: How To Cut a Full Sheet to Make 2 Card Bases

Most cards start using a 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of cardstock and cutting it in half to make 2 card bases.  You can either cut it the “long” (portrait paper view) way or the “short” way (landscape paper view).  Either way will still give you the same sized card and card front to design on; it’s just a matter of which direction you want your card to open (left to right, or open from the bottom).

Cardstock Basics: Cutting Templates For Layers

In the video I explain how to cut your layers 1/4″ or 1/8″ BIGGER or SMALLER to make the perfect card layers.  Quite awhile ago, I shared how you can make templates to help you figuring out what size layers to cut.  Check out my prior post to learn how to make them plus there is another video about cutting cardstock in the older post.  Maybe if today’s video confused you, watch that one to make sure you completely understand.  It’s really easy once you grab the concept.
